Welcome To North Eastern Radio Flyers

Winter is upon us and, on a positive note, we should be getting pleasant wind-free sunny flying days. On the down side, for those early-bird flyers who like a less crowded sky, it is freezing cold. We will be hosting the GAA friendly on Sunday 26th May so, regrettably, the club will be closed to all members. You are welcome, however, to come along and see what an aerobatics competition is all about.

You will see the new concrete slab for parking your model aircraft. Thank you Allan Snyman for getting this done and for having the drainage problem sorted out at the northern end of the runway. The club is starting to look really good. Thanks also to Derek Grobbelaar who spends a lot of time at the club making sure the runway is maintained and the grass kept short.

Dear Members

On a more serious note, we get visitors to the club who try to flout the rules. Last week, a visitor was found to be regularly flying at NERF without SAMAA membership. In addition to this, he was being coached by a member who does not have the required SAMAA proficiency rating. This is a serious safety breach. An out-of-control model aircraft can cause a serious injury, possibly even a fatal one. This kind of nightmare would impact the club severely, probably resulting in it being closed down. The visitor pilot would be uninsured and liable because he is not a SAMAA member.

The worst thing about this episode was that the individual concerned was told two weeks before that he could not fly without SAMAA membership. Needless to say, when he was admonished about it, he took offence and threatened going to another club….in spite of the fact that he is not even a NERF club member. All we can say is, please go and don’t come back!

Don’t get us wrong. We encourage visitor pilots and if you have a friend or someone you know who is a non-member and would like to fly at NERF, we welcome it. Please just make sure he or she has a current SAMAA membership and also encourage him or her to:

1. Pay the landing fee if a proficient flyer

2. Join the NERF Flying School if flight training is needed

3. Join the club if wanting to fly regularly

Woza fly-day!
